At the Hertz counter in Sydney airport, the staff member tried to take advantage of my poor English by adding full insurance without my consent. Do they think I’m bad with numbers too? I kept refusing, and with the help of a nearby Singaporean Chinese woman who translated for me, I finally understood that even if the incident was someone else's fault, I would still owe $5000 AUD without full insurance. Seriously? Who makes such rules? Do they have such authority? Eventually, they changed it to basic insurance upon my insistence!
We hoped they could take us to the airport when returning the car, but they refused. We had a lot of luggage and they didn't agree even after discussing. It was a very poor experience.
They kept trying to sell me commercial insurance for $30 a day. Fortunately, I asked a friend back home who told me not to buy it because the rental fee already includes insurance. What they were selling locally is likely similar to the non-deductible insurance in our country. If you're an experienced driver from home, you don't need to buy it. Remember, don't change lanes recklessly—foreigners drive by the rules.
The member of staff were extremely helpful and were king enough to give us a free upgrade.
