The rental was supposed to only hold a pre-authorization and include a service for returning the car without a full tank. I specifically asked if it was just a pre-authorization, and they confirmed it. I assumed the fuel service was included, but it turned out to be a prepaid fuel option by default. They kept pushing insurance and insisted on adding it. Finally, the rental agreement through this company got canceled—too disappointing.
The car was a bit old and had manual locks for the doors. I had to use the key every day to open the front two doors, and the rear doors had to be unlocked from the inside. It was frustrating, especially for someone short.
They kept intimidating us to upgrade to a more expensive model, claiming the reserved car wasn't available and gave us a two-door mini car, leaving us in a tough spot. About the insurance, they said if we didn't buy it, we needed to provide local social security numbers, basically implying it was illegal to drive without it. I wondered, is the Zuzuche website a big scam? Can't I just drive without these extras? I had already paid over 2000 online, then was forced to pay an additional $390 on-site. The experience was horrible, and I will never choose Zuzuche again, nor recommend it to anyone!
The shuttle bus from Dollar at the Big Island airport is less frequent than other companies, so we had to wait a bit. The staff at the branch had a good attitude but kept trying to upgrade our reservation for an extra fee. Since we had already booked a large SUV, we didn't want to upgrade, but the staff insisted that our reserved model couldn't go to Waipio Valley and even called the manager to offer us a discount. Seeing how eager they were to make money, we agreed to upgrade to a 5.6L Nissan SUV. After traveling around the Big Island, I feel a mid-sized SUV would be sufficient for a family of three because it rained when we went to Waipio Valley, and we couldn’t go to the valley floor due to the fog. Returning the car was very straightforward and convenient.
