The agent misled us into purchasing E-Zpass for $350, but it wasn't activated and couldn't be used. We had to pay tolls out of our own pocket throughout the trip. When returning the car, we didn't get a refund, only the toll fees we paid ourselves were reimbursed, which amounted to a few dozen dollars. It might have been an oversight that E-Zpass wasn't activated, but I explicitly said it was too expensive and unnecessary when renting the car. The agent falsely claimed that many places don’t accept cash, but during our two-week trip, there was only one such toll station. Considering the toll costs, $350 is unreasonable. Moreover, not having E-Zpass activated meant we couldn't enjoy the convenience of automatic toll payments, yet we were still charged $350, which is completely incomprehensible and unacceptable.
They were OK, service quick and ok, tried to force us to buy an EZ-Pass (more on this later). The location has moved but was still in JFK. We got a bit concerned as couldn't find it anymore on Google maps! We had to ask someone there where they had moved to, luckily basically the same place just tucked around a corner. The major issue we had was with EZ-PASS. EZ-PASS is 100% required on America's cashless toll roads, if you don't have it you are out of luck and will be fined by the rental company for each toll you pass. The rental company wanted to charge us an arm and a leg - $240 for their ez-pass usage. We refused as we were told not to accept any extras. I then confirmed we would definitely need one after a lot of frantic online research, and had to find an alternative way to get it. This was extremely difficult. We eventually found an EZ-PASS service center where we could walk in and buy one - this took many hours to find as their main website was down and the customer service rep we called couldn't advise us on how to acquire one at all...... We were able to blag our way into getting one from this service center (an hour process in the center, not a quick purchase). All in all it took maybe 4-5 hours extra in total before we could actually start driving to our destination. In total our tolls cost maybe $50 with our ezpass instead of $240 so technically this was worth it. It would have been REALLY nice to know about this beforehand!!!
The staff's attitude was extremely poor during car rental. They didn't have the model we initially reserved and didn't explain why, just provided a so-called equivalent model. When we tried to discuss changing the model with the staff, they were very rude and even made discriminatory remarks.
Counter staff were very grumpy and unhelpful. There was the option of an ez-pass for tolls that was not explained at all which was also very unhelpful. They really appeared to nor care less.
Car staff on the other hand were very happy and helpful.
Issues about the e-pass rental fees and toll fees need to be clearly stated on the platform. Every time, I end up getting tricked. This time, I didn't dare to get an e-pass because I was worried about high rental fees. Unexpectedly, it's all cashless tolls. We passed through about two toll stations on the first day, and later the bill came to $52.25.
When picking up the car, the counter staff added additional insurance to the agreement without informing me and asked me to pay by card. I only noticed after reviewing the documents and had to argue to get it removed. The store engages in forced insurance sales.
“Staff are really helpful but there just isn't enough cars at the rental site at JFK NY.”
About Thrifty:7.0/10
The main issue is the car (economy) we wanted was not there. We were not the only ones this happened to. we were offered an upgrade but again the upgrade was just the only one car in the lot! Very big and not for us. Had to wait for a car to become available. This has happened to me twice with Thrifty at JFK. For this reason I'll be booking with someone else next time.
About QEEQ:10.0/10
Booking process was good. I didn't use price dropper. I would recommend easyrentcars and would use again.
The car speed was very quick. Upon arrival, you just hand over the keys to the staff. The explanation of insurance and toll passes took a bit of time, but there was no hard sell. Overall, the process was quick and the staff were courteous.
Very unfriendly service, all staff have a bad attitude, and they just keep asking for extra charges to make more money. They wouldn't give the car if you arrive before the scheduled time, and they charge an extra $60 for returning the car not even 30 minutes late, which is more than a day's rental. The worst part is the terrible attitude, especially from the Black staff who could be very rude. The worst car rental experience ever. Never rent from this company again, never rent from this company again, never rent from this company again.
