The car provided was a local model, not the Highlander we booked. The rental office insisted it was the same model, but the interior space was noticeably smaller, similar to a RAV4. Fuel consumption was about 30% higher than the Highlander.
The car consumed a lot of fuel. Initially, I planned to return it in Wellington via the ferry, but due to strong winds, the ferry was canceled. I had to return it in the same city, which cost an additional 2500, which is more expensive than the rental itself, utterly outrageous.
The process of picking up the car at Christchurch Airport was quick and efficient. The car was new and performed well without any issues during the 15 days of driving. Pleasant experience!
When returning the car in Picton, I didn't know about the drop key box method and couldn't pay the rental fee in cash as intended, had to use a credit card instead. Hence, couldn't use up the New Zealand dollars I had exchanged. Picton, being a key hub between the North and South Islands, should have continuous on-site staff like in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
