Terrible, terrible, terrible! First, the car pick-up location was changed without any notification from the rental company, making us wander in the cold for half an hour. The new location was very hard to find! We almost missed our car because of this! Second, the car given to us had a wet interior with many water stains on the floor, and it didn't match the model we booked. The trunk was too small to fit our three 28-inch suitcases, causing us a lot of trouble every day trying to rearrange them! Third, we had an early ferry at 7 AM on the last day from Lofoten to Bodo, and needed to rush to catch our flight after returning the car. To be safe, we filled up the tank at a nearby station the day before and didn't drive anywhere else. It took just five minutes to reach the ferry terminal from the hotel and about seven to eight minutes to get to the car return point from the ferry in Bodo. When we returned the car, we confirmed the fuel gauge still showed full. Yet, we were charged a ridiculous fee for not returning the car with a full tank… 1199 for a supposedly incomplete fill-up? That’s outrageous! What a lousy rental experience! Terrible!
The service was quite good. Avis and Budget share the same counter, and the queue was shorter compared to Sixt and Hertz. There were no extra upsells for additional insurance. I booked a Toyota Yaris but received a Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive. An Autopass was included, which worked for highways and ferries in Norway. At the end, highway fees were deducted from the card. When returning the car, gasoline cars need a full tank, and electric cars require at least 70% charge. Our RAV4 hybrid had no charge when we picked it up, so we just drove it as a gasoline car.
There were many people waiting to pick up their cars at Avis, so it was a bit slow.
Since we had a lot of people and luggage, we booked a 7-seater car but were given a Sharan.
However, I suggest that a Sharan is really not suitable for driving on those roads; the driving experience was much worse...
Also, the Avis staff member was always lethargic. He told us where the car was parked, but after looking around three times, we couldn't find it. When we asked him to help us find it, it turned out they had parked it in the wrong place... This experience was a bit disappointing...
I rented a Volkswagen Polo and they gave me a brand new Golf. No need to wash the car before returning it.
