The prices for different car models online are different, but the payment and model at pick-up were the same. My language skills are not good, so I just managed to get by.
This was a terrible rental experience.
1. When picking up the car, the customer service insisted on a credit card. The system showed both my ICBC Mastercard from China and my U.S. VISA card as debit cards. However, I have used these cards at other rental companies, even at ALAMO, without any issues.
2. They required a flight number to the destination. I work and study at the destination, so I don't have a flight number. Even showing my work ID didn't help.
We argued back and forth over these two issues, wasting a lot of effort and time.
Like: We had a problem with the car- the windshield cracked from a pebble in the road and they directed us to the nearest rental place and replaced the car.
Took the AirTrain to the car rental area at JFK Airport, which was easy to find since all rental companies are located there. Alamo and National share the same office, but Alamo's signs are less noticeable. Arrived at JFK Airport at 8:30 PM local time and there was no line at the rental counter. Booked a Chrysler 200 but received a Toyota Camry. The car had about 20,000 km on it but was in good condition overall. Drove 2,400 km over 6 days without any issues. The elderly African American gentleman at the store did some upselling, mainly for vehicle upgrades and roadside assistance.

Like: We made a 4-week road trip from NYC to Miami via the northern Appalachians and Savannah. We returned to NYC via the southern Appalachians, Wash DC, and Boston. We used Airbnb lodging, which was a great experience. We experienced beautiful scenery, historic cities, great beaches, diverse nature, etc. Our rented Chevy Suburban was perfect for the trip. The navigator made travel in strange places easy. We had reserved a slightly smaller vehicle, but the Alamo person suggested a larger vehicle. We are glad he did and were satisfied with the choice. Although picking up and dropping off at the airport may be slightly more expensive, we felt it was worth the extra money. It was easy and hassle-free. Dislike: The CHANGE OIL warning came on about halfway through our trip. I called Alamo and they suggested supplying us with a new vehicle. I suggested that we could have the oil changed if Alamo would reimburse us for the cost. This was a minor inconvenience, but not a big problem; the oil change was done in about half an hour. At the drop-off the Alamo person gave us a new receipt and said the amount would be returned to our credit card account. I haven't had a chance to verify this yet, but I trust we'll get the reimbursement.
