Picked up the car at JFK Airport in New York. The model we booked was unavailable, so we were given a different one. We were pretty thorough when inspecting the car based on the website's instructions, which slowed us down a bit. Their attitude was just average. Fortunately, all the existing scratches on the car were documented. Their staff mentioned that this was beneficial for us as any new scratches wouldn't be our responsibility. Returning the car was quick, and even though we drove an extra 40 kilometers after refueling, they didn't make a fuss. Overall, very satisfied.
I picked up the car at San Francisco Airport and returned it in downtown Los Angeles. There was a translator at pickup, and the return was smooth without any communication needed. Quite convenient!
The vehicle was good. I booked a Hyundai Santa Fe but received a comparable Chevrolet with less than 4000 miles on it. The Alamo in New York is not very large, just a single counter. You can pick up the car by yourself. The staff might try to upsell a bit but it's not very forceful. Overall, the impression was good.
The service at Alamo was terrible. They immediately tried to sell me additional services. When I declined their suggestions, they deliberately wasted time and were very inefficient. Renting a RAV4 was not cheap (compared to a Grand Cherokee), but they didn't have that car. I could only choose between an older model Small Cherokee and an outdated KIA. Very disappointing!
The service process is simple and the car condition is good. Especially the second time, no driver's license translation was needed. It must already be in the system!
Alamo and National share the same rental center, but the signage is a bit small. The service process is straightforward: you only need your driver's license, a translation, and a credit card to pick up the car. The pick-up process is extremely simple: give your rental slip to the staff, and they will lead you to three cars. You can choose any of them. The return process is also very simple; the staff will just check the exterior and features of the car.
Additionally, most cars are relatively new. I rented a car on December 18th, and it was manufactured on December 1st. The car was in excellent condition! If you don't often travel long distances, you might not need to rent an E-ZPASS since it costs $4-$5 per day. However, if you frequently change cities, having E-ZPASS for quick toll lane access is very convenient. Typical tolls range from $1.40 to $4. Especially on American highways, there are fast toll lanes (up to 65MPH or 120km/h) for quicker passage.
After exiting the airport, take a few stops on the free airport air train, and you will see Alamo's shuttle bus to the rental location. Very convenient. Returning the car in the city was a bit tricky, but it went smoothly!
The store is large and has a complete range of vehicles. Even if you don't speak the language well, gestures will do. Especially when returning the car, it takes less than a minute, it's incredibly fast!
