“Things to Know Before Renting:
Do you need to clean the vehicle before returning it?

About FIRST CAR RENTAL:2.0/10
The service counter was unattended, no indication of when staff would return. The vehicle was dirty, old, the windshield washer fluid and brake oil were both at the minimum level. Poor service!
The car provided was decent for the local standard, nearly new Hyundai Elantra. However, it did not have a parking sensor. When I booked the car, I asked the customer service of Zuzuche, and they said there was no limit on drivers. But when I picked up the car, I was told that adding a second driver would cost an additional 500 local currency, about 100 RMB. Since the Zuzuche order details didn't mention this clearly, we had to pay the extra 100 RMB.
There was nothing unsatisfactory with the supplier. My dissatisfaction lies with QEEQ for not passing on the information about my child safety seat to the rental company.
First's service in Mauritius is like a fly in a perfect soup; it nauseated me during my brief interaction at the airport. Regrettably, here's my direct evaluation:
1. I waited an hour for the car. I was supposed to pick it up at 6:00pm, but didn't get it until after 7:00pm, yet they still required me to return it by 6:00pm;
2. They wouldn't let me use a credit card, only cash was accepted. Was it really just because the POS was broken?
3. The $30+ deposit I paid in advance was not acknowledged by First, so I had to pay the full amount in cash on the spot;
4. I got lost on the way back and returned the car two hours late, and they charged me for an entire day;
5. They didn't provide any receipt or invoice, not even a credit card slip (since they wouldn't let me use a credit card);
6. When I asked where I could exchange my remaining rupees for dollars before heading to the airport, they told me it wasn't possible and suggested I give it to them as a tip. Later, airport staff told me I could exchange it at the departure hall;
In summary, my whole trip to Mauritius was filled with sunshine and beautiful beaches of the Indian Ocean, marred only by this shameless car rental company and its employees, like a fly in a perfect soup. It's disgusting.
You should thoroughly evaluate your partners in Mauritius. If this behavior is company-wide, consider terminating your partnership with First. If it's just the actions of that specific employee, please have the company provide a detailed explanation and corresponding measures.
The service was excellent; we only waited a few minutes before being led to pick up the car. The rental company staff were very knowledgeable about the car's condition and pointed out all the scratches on the body. Of course, you should carefully inspect the car to ensure nothing is missed. It's best to take photos as evidence and confirm the scratches with the staff while looking at their records. The return process was also smooth. The staff only asked if everything was okay, I said yes, and after a few minutes of waiting, I cleared the remaining payment. There was no upselling during the pickup process; I just showed my driver's license, passport, pickup form, and credit card. The car was in great condition.
In the end, I was extorted for a 200 rupee cleaning fee, claiming the car was not clean, even though it wasn't dirty at all! I even gave 50 rupees as a tip, but that's just how it is in this African country. I've never encountered this situation in other countries before!
The car was in good condition, relatively new, with less than 30,000 kilometers driven. It was a Chevrolet Cruze. Acceleration was a bit slow, but you can't expect too much from a 1.6L engine. The price was reasonable, 10-20% cheaper than AVIS and HERTZ. The only unreasonable part was that the fuel gauge was at 1/4 when I picked up the car, not full as advertised. Fortunately, I managed to return it with the gauge at the same level.
Satisfied with the service, but you need to contact the rental company before picking up the car. Otherwise, the location can be hard to find, unlike in China where addresses are specific with designated buildings and offices. It's best to agree on the pickup location a day in advance for convenience. However, the procedures and return were quite easy and the staff were very enthusiastic. Next time, I will choose FIRST CAR RENTAL again.
