I suggest renters to definitely check the vehicle's condition. I couldn't imagine renting a car with severe scratches on the rims on my first try. They changed the car after my complaint. I felt very unsafe.
Very dissatisfied! I booked in advance and paid in full, but when I arrived at the specified location to pick up the car, the counter said there were no cars available at all. Yes, not a single car. I immediately called the US headquarters, but it was basically useless! The attitude of the counter staff was extremely bad. After a 16-hour flight, I thought I could get the car and head straight to the hotel. The customer service personnel were not only unapologetic but also very impatient. Having lived abroad for 12 years, I can't understand this level of service and attitude. I used to think that as long as it was a regular company operating abroad, there would be regulatory oversight and the credibility wouldn't be in doubt. This experience really opened my eyes! So I urge everyone to choose bigger, well-known companies like Budget or Avis, as the service quality is more assured.
Due to a sudden change of plans, Dollar refunded the prepaid insurance and other expenses. They also agreed that Zuzuche would handle the refund of the extra rental fees I prepaid.
The service was mediocre. They didn't have the Nissan Altima mid-size car I reserved, and there was no free upgrade or any explanation. They just kept insisting that the Nissan Versa was the car I rented. Another friend who rented with me faced the same issue: he reserved a Ford Focus but was given a Hyundai Accent. It seems that not providing the reserved car model is very common with Dollar.
The rental company is conveniently located; just get off the airport's small train. However, the forced charges are annoying. The order also did not match what was on the rental website.
Arrived at the store late at night, scheduled to pick up the car at midnight. The staff was changing shifts, and the black female employee taking over was very arrogant, with a difficult-to-understand accent. Even when I asked her to repeat herself, she didn't slow down, making it very frustrating. If I were in my home country, I would have yelled at her. I had reserved a Grand Cherokee but got a Dodge Journey instead. Although the car was new, its power was much worse than the Grand Cherokee. Dollar is playing word games, claiming 'Grand Cherokee or similar' when there isn't anything similar. I've rented from Dollar several times, never getting the specified model. Very disappointed with Dollar and won't use them again.
The attitude was mediocre, and they tried to upsell me on additional costs. The main issue was that I booked a Chevrolet Suburban, but they gave me a much smaller Chevrolet Tahoe. When we raised our concerns, the DOLLAR staff said expressionlessly that they didn't have any Suburbans! It's frustrating to deal with such a situation.
The service at the Kennedy Airport location was average. It might be because it was busy with many people. The staff seemed indifferent, passable at best.
At the New York airport branch, a plus-sized African American staff member served us with an indifferent attitude and slow actions. Despite arriving on time to pick up the car, she told us it would take another two to three hours for it to be ready. As we were in a hurry, we asked for any available similar car. Only then did she provide a Toyota. This wouldn't have been a big issue, but she mentioned they were changing the policy from full-to-full fuel to full-to-empty. In our rush, we agreed, but the fuel tank was only at 90%. When we returned the car, we were charged over $90 for the fuel and taxes. It's unfair to expect a car to be returned with an empty tank.
Overall satisfied, especially with the ease of changing cars. A minor letdown was that there should have been a few car options to choose from when picking up.
The lady at the store was very nice and provided good service. Overall, I am quite satisfied. Actually, all foreign car rental companies are pretty much the same, so you can rest assured.
