When I got there, the man at the counter told me they had upgraded me to a Mercedes. I was worried that my luggage wasn't going to fit but I managed to get it in...just! But there was no navigation system in the car which surprised me for a Mercedes and they forgot to tell me that the car was from the US and was in MPH. So I had to work out what speed I had to go. With no navigation I had to use my phone and at times it dropped out where I was, so that wasn't the best. Then the electronic key battery died and I had to find out, 1. how to take the battery out and then 2. where to get a battery. The staff when I returned the car were good and credited me for the purchase of the batteris. But that should have been checked before I left with the car as it happened right after I picked it up.

The car was great, but the counter initially said they just didn't have the car I booked for but opted for pick up trucks and smaller SUVs. I insisted that we needed the medium size SUV we booked for, which he eventually gave. The Santa Fe had great options though. Overall, a great vehicle.

This is the fourth country I have done self-driving in abroad: Russia, New Zealand, the USA, and Canada. This time was the most frustrating, not because of spending more money due to language barriers, but because of the service attitude of the car rental company staff. In the other countries, even though I didn't understand the local language, the car rental company always made sure to clearly inform us about any additional charges. However, this lady had a very average attitude. When she saw we didn't understand English well, she didn't make an effort to communicate properly. When I asked if there were any extra charges, she didn't explain clearly and just said OK and had me sign. Only after signing and seeing an additional 200 CAD charge on my card did I realize what had happened. Communicating with her was difficult, and we initially thought it was a deposit. When returning the car, the inspector clarified with a simple explanation that we were charged over 200 CAD for insurance. Despite explicitly telling her I didn't want insurance, she still applied it. The problem isn't the money but the attitude toward service.

Very efficient. When asked for a driver's license, they mentioned that having a Canadian one was convenient. So there were no translation issues. All the contracts were displayed on the screen, and I just signed to agree. Found the car outside, the key was inside, and I got an inspection sheet as well. If there were no scratches, I didn't need to worry. At the exit gate, someone checked my documents and contract again.

Budget is a good company. I booked a Ford Flex, but it wasn't available, so they upgraded me to a Chrysler 7-seater VAN. This car has a heavy chassis, strong power, good handling, and cold air conditioning! However, it does consume a lot of fuel, but considering the great experience, it was worth it. We drove from Toronto to Niagara Falls to Ottawa to Montreal and back to Toronto, and it was very enjoyable!

The staff left without saying anything, and I had to ask to find out that I needed to inspect the vehicle myself and mark any damages. The guard at the exit then signed off on it. When I arrived they tried to put my into a mini van claiming that was the only vehicle they had. After reading similar reviews I told them that the van was not acceptable, that I had paid for a SUV and that was the vehicle I wanted. The service representative was a newbie and wrote down the wrong vehicle location. We didn't double-check and took the wrong car. After the real renter drove it away, we realized we might have left our license in that car. The representative was very slow in contacting the other renter and even claimed not to know what car was parked there. We had to rely on our memory of the license plate to track it down, and by then, the car had been gone for 20 minutes.
