The pickup process took longer than expected when compared to other companies I have dealt with before. Upon returning the car, the rental company informed me that there were scratches on the front disc wheel and charged me 171 euros. However, when I received the invoice via email, it stated that I only owed 140 euros.
The same attendant handled both the pick-up and drop-off, and he was quite unprofessional. It took almost half an hour to complete the paperwork, and others at the rental company seemed embarrassed for him. He was very slow and dragging his feet. Eventually, another female attendant processed the pick-up in just 2 minutes. The same thing happened during the drop-off – there was nothing complicated, just needed someone to check the car, which took over 10 minutes to arrange. After the inspection, there were no issues, but he went off to do something else and took almost another 10 minutes to finalize the paperwork. If you rent a car at Athens Airport, try to avoid this company if possible. If you encounter this specific attendant, you'll need patience and a good temper. If you're in a hurry to get to the airport, it could be troublesome.
Overall service was pretty good, but the contract did not state that the fuel level at return must match the level at pickup. When we got the car, it only had two bars of fuel, not a full tank. This made it hard to gauge how much fuel to add when returning the car. We ended up having to pay an extra 15 Euros because the tank was slightly underfilled. Other companies operate on a full-to-full policy. I can't help but feel there's a bit of trickery involved.
The car was very new, with only a few thousand kilometers. Both the shuttle driver and the counter staff were very friendly and professional. There were no upsells and the deposit was returned on time, with no hidden costs.
The efficiency at the Europecar counter is extremely low. While Sixt could handle three customers in the same amount of time, Europecar can only handle one. This is because every customer has to communicate with the counter staff who are not very proficient in English. The staff also have to type in each letter of the name, address, and phone number one by one, which is very slow.
