They gave us a different car than stated in the reservation. It was falling apart from the get go (badly beat up and the wheel covers were affixed with plastic strips) and it smelled inside. We didn't realize we had made a few paint scruffs on the front bumper and they charged us 840 dollars essentially claiming they would have to change the front part, though no bumps had been made. Absolute fraudsters.

The car was well scratched and dented. The front passenger seat did not slide far enough back - only halfway. All documentation (handbook, warning notices etc) written in Japanese, not English. Proprietor not interested in our comments on return of the vehicle.
The car provided was a 2007 model with 140,000 kms on the odometer. We rented an ‘economy’ size car but received a car that most rental companies would classify as ‘compact’. Half way through our journey, we realised the front tyre was so bald that the wire was showing. The spare was only an emergency temporary spare and not sufficient to travel the distance required for the rest of our trip. We contacted the emergency EZU number and had no answer. When we got through to EZU the staff simply said ‘take it to a mechanic and we’ll sort it out when you return the car’. We were in Queenstown and attempted to take the car to EZU’s Queenstown branch but could not locate it and their customer service refused to provide the address. The only options provided by EZU were to repair the car ourselves or leave it at the airport (without a replacement provided). Overall, EZU were difficult to deal with, we were given an unroadworthy car and no emergency assistance.
The pick-up and drop-off shuttle service was very convenient, and I was satisfied with the other services as well. However, we had an accident during our trip, where the other party was fully responsible, and we had local police documentation proving it. Moreover, we had purchased full insurance with zero deductible. Despite this, the rental company claimed it was industry practice and withheld a deposit of 16,000 yuan, stating it would be returned a month later. In contrast, our friends who rented from a foreign car rental company under similar circumstances only had to write a report and were not charged a cent. I don't understand why EZU operates this way. This rental experience has affected my choice to continue renting from QEEQ in the future.
The counter staff were helpful however the car was old and had in excess of 100,000 km on the clock when I picked it up. Although it ran well I was concerned that I may have had broken down. The interior of the car was well worn with stained upholstery.
We rented the car in Christchurch and returned it in Auckland. When we arrived in Auckland, there was no record of our rental. We ended up waiting nearly an hour to finalize everything. The company is small and seems to try to find issues with the car to claim insurance (others returning their cars felt the same). We managed to avoid extra charges after insisting on our point, even though we had purchased full insurance.
