We were assisted by an enthusiastic and humorous African-American lady. She only briefly mentioned additional insurance, and when we declined, she did not push further or show any dissatisfaction. Overall, the evaluation of Alamo is very high.
Throughout the trip, we used three cars in total. Two of them were new cars with only a few thousand kilometers, and one had over 20,000 kilometers. Overall evaluation: trustworthy.
Returned and picked up the car at Auckland Airport. Small airport with fewer people and even fewer cars to choose from. The so-called 'free upgrade' is basically based on luck; you get whatever car is available. I didn't encounter any Chinese service, but my English is fine. Both pickup and drop-off are self-service, very convenient and straightforward.
On the Chinese car rental website, 'mid to large' is labeled in Chinese, while in English it's 'standard.' Alamo's vehicle categories are 'small, standard, large, extra-large'. The difference between the English and Chinese descriptions caused us confusion. Therefore, the English terms should also be marked on the website to avoid misunderstandings.
Picked up the car in San Francisco using the self-service machine, which was quite convenient. However, you need to enter all the reservation details again, so the counter might be faster. No one tried to sell me insurance.
There was no upselling, but they added an extra tank and roadside assistance directly to the bill. When I noticed and pointed it out, they modified it, but the fee is still frozen and not refunded to my account.
Highly recommend Alamo! When you exit SFO airport, take the escalator on the left or right side and hop on the shuttle train directly to the rental counter, very convenient. We added $5 per day for roadside assistance. It was secured with a credit card, and in about 10 minutes, we went to the parking lot to get the car. The key was inside the car, just ensure you have your driver's license and contract ready, as you'll need it to leave. On the second day in San Francisco, our car window got smashed near the Palace of Fine Arts. We reported it to the police, then drove to Union Square to try to change the car, but we were told we had to go back to the airport. The car change process was quick and hassle-free, and it was free. We got a new car with only 2400 miles on it, which was even better than the one we had before. Great service! We returned the car at LAX, drove straight to the parking lot, and it took about 3 minutes to inspect. Then, a shuttle bus took us to our hotel. This rental company is awesome, and we will choose Alamo again in the future!
The flight was delayed for over 5 hours. When we arrived, we took a shuttle bus directly to the rental car company from the airport. There weren't many people, and the paperwork was processed quickly. There were no excessive sales pitches, and the price matched what I had booked.
I booked a Dodge Grand Caravan on QEEQ, but when I arrived in the USA, I found the trunk was not very spacious. The Alamo attendant recommended a Toyota Sienna instead. It had much more space, easily fitting five people, four suitcases, and a wheelchair. Plus, the car was brand new with only 700 miles on it. It handled very well, making it perfect for the complex hills and streets of San Francisco.
Initially, I rented a Cherokee, but when I arrived, they told me that model was unavailable and only had a Hyundai SUV. It felt like a huge letdown. Then they tried to persuade me to upgrade to a Dodge for an extra 3000 yuan, but I stood firm and refused to pay any extra. When I got to the garage, the person there gave me a Dodge, a free upgrade. There was no Hyundai, just a lone Dodge in the garage. You get it!
The staff tried to sell us insurance during pickup. We didn't listen to his introduction, and as a result, we were given the wrong floor for car collection, causing us some trouble!
