I don't know why it shows my order as a mini MOV or similar here. I booked a mid-size MPV, 7 seats, and it also shows in the order as a mid-size MPV | Nissan Quest or similar, automatic/4 doors/7 seats?! They charged me an upgrade fee of $797 at the store! The vehicle had issues, but the customer service staff were quite enthusiastic!
The store has a self-service car rental machine where you need to make a video call with Hertz's customer service to confirm various reservation details. One step involves inserting your driver's license into the machine's slot. Chinese driver's licenses do not work because they lack a readable chip. If you have a Chinese driver's license, you will need to go to the counter, and the line there usually takes about an hour.
Hertz is a few kilometers away from Los Angeles airport. The queue wasn't too long, but they did try to upsell. I booked a mid-sized SUV like a Toyota Rav4 or a similar model, but they said Rav4 or Ford Escape would cost extra. Initially, they gave me a Jeep SUV with over 30,000 miles, which seemed to be a Compass. I didn't want it, but couldn't choose freely in the parking lot. I had to go back to the counter, and they gave me a slightly newer Jeep Compass. I insisted I didn't like Jeeps, and there were many Nissan Rogues in the parking lot. Finally, they gave me a Nissan Rogue.
I lived in the US for three years, and although I didn't have any car rental experiences, I used to think Hertz, being a big company, would have standardized services. After this experience, a big NO!! I will never rent from them again! First, we booked a Jeep 2.0 on zuzuche.com, but when we got to the Los Angeles International Airport pickup point, we waited in line for 45 minutes only to be told that the car was no longer available! The worst part was that they offered us an upgrade (for extra money) to a Dodge (which is much worse than a Jeep in terms of driving experience!!!!!!!). Third, the front desk staff repeatedly tried to sell us additional insurance products (for most Chinese tourists, basic insurance is more than enough, especially if they've already bought insurance before the trip). Fourth, they lied to us, saying that filling up gas in Los Angeles by yourself would cost $9.99 per gallon (hell no, it was actually $2.69/gallon, blatant deceit, and it wasn't just one employee's behavior; it was written clearly on a blackboard at the front desk with $9.99, showing that employees commonly engage in deceptive practices), just to make us buy their fuel service waiver (which costs an extra $53). The result was that I rented a Dodge from Hertz, which had poor handling, especially on the highway. The car was very light and prone to accidents. The 4-day rental price was even higher than the 6-day rental of a Ford Mustang I booked later! Hertz, never again!
There is a dedicated shuttle from Los Angeles Airport to the rental office. The cars are relatively new and perform well. Overall, the experience was great. There was an attempt to sell additional insurance, but I declined.
The store was a bit far from where we were staying, about a 15-20 minute walk. The store itself was quite small, and there weren't many cars to choose from. Hertz is a big company, so the service was nice. Returning the car was very convenient; just checked the fuel gauge at the airport and we were done.
The payment from the car rental order wasn't linked to the Hertz location in Salt Lake City. It took them over an hour to sort it out, and they were very impatient. Our clients were also waiting, and we needed to get on the road. Whose time is valuable?
I specifically requested not to have a Japanese car but found out it was still a Japanese car once I reached the parking spot. With luggage and kids, it was inconvenient to go back and queue to change the car. In the end, when leaving the parking lot, they asked me to modify my order and added several insurance items I didn't need.
When we arrived at the Hertz car rental at Los Angeles Airport, the staff required us to pay a $400 insurance fee, claiming it was mandatory. After some hassle, the customer service from ZuZuChe helped us cancel this fee.
In a diverse country like the U.S., Hertz should employ staff from different countries to address language barriers for international travelers. Initially rented a convertible sports car, but found it cramped and exchanged it for an SUV at the store without any extra charge and with a full tank of gas.
The Hertz Los Angeles Airport location is actually a bit far. Though I originally reserved a 4Runner and saw many of them at the pickup location, they wouldn't give me one. Instead, they gave me a Nissan Pathfinder, but the paperwork wasn't completed properly. When I went back to the counter to sort it out, they inexplicably made me switch cars or pay more money. The whole process took over an hour, and the counter staff weren't very friendly.
As expected from a major company, the service was excellent, the store was large, and they had many car models. Both renting and returning the car were very quick.
As expected from the top brand, the parking lot is huge. However, not sure why other brands' shuttle buses came several times, but Hertz's hadn't arrived yet. Returning the car was convenient, with staff right there waiting.
