Compared to other rental companies, Avis has a big name but is rather deceitful; they have many rules and conditions, and their charges are unclear and lack detailed explanations. The car provided was completely different from what was described, and they pretended not to understand us so they wouldn't have to change the car. The trunk was very small and different from the description. We rented cars twice during this trip, and the other company's process was notably simpler and more convenient with fewer issues. I recommend not using Avis.
The store we chose was supposed to be only 304 meters from the hotel, but because we had three large suitcases, we decided to take a taxi there. Good thing we did, because 304 meters was actually quite a walk. It felt quite far. On that day, there were many people lining up to pick up their cars, mostly fellow countrymen. It took about 1.5 hours to complete the paperwork and inspect the car. The S60 we originally booked was not available, so AVIS upgraded us for free to a Benz CLA180 diesel version since we had already prepaid. The car was not particularly new and had many scratches, but we were still happy about the free upgrade. Three girls driving this car was quite a smooth experience. However, the low chassis of the coupe made driving on D400 quite nerve-wracking.
I picked up the car from the Izmir city center branch, no need to queue, and the staff was quite efficient. When we returned the car at Kayseri Airport, as soon as we entered the airport parking lot, the staff promptly approached us to check the vehicle and complete the paperwork. It only took a few minutes, I have to admire their efficiency.
I booked a Volvo S60, but there was no such model available at the site. AVIS provided a new Ford Mondeo with only 4110KM of mileage. The tank was full and the car was very clean. Driving it was very comfortable. The staff detailed the necessary precautions when I picked up the car. I voluntarily purchased additional tire and glass insurance. Overall, very satisfied!
I booked a VOLVO S60, and the order explicitly stated S60. However, when we got to the counter, they informed us that there was no S60 available and gave us a V40 instead. The car was quite average too. To make matters worse, when returning the car, we missed a gas station, and the fuel tank was only half full. For that half tank of V40 diesel, AVIS charged us 300 lira, almost 700 RMB, which is roughly 23 RMB per liter of diesel—a ridiculously high price. After a tough negotiation, we managed to get it down to 250 lira. Overall, I'm very dissatisfied with AVIS. I paid for a mid-sized car but got a compact car experience. Fortunately, we only had 3 people traveling; if there were 5, the trip would have been impossible. Additionally, being overcharged when returning the car was aggravating. If I weren't afraid of missing my flight, I would definitely have gone to find a gas station before returning the car. Choosing AVIS initially seemed like a good idea because of its reputed service and reliability, but it turned out no better than any other company, if not worse. More money spent for poor service.
Extremely dissatisfied!!!
The AVIS rental point at Kayseri Airport is incredibly dishonest. I have had numerous rental experiences in many countries over the past decade, and this was the worst experience I've ever had.
Firstly, they overcharge customers in every possible way. Secondly, during normal working hours, the rental staff were not present at their station, causing delays for customers returning cars and catching flights.
Starting with the overcharging: 1. When renting a car on June 23, they charged extra by using an exchange rate 8% higher than the bank rate. Although the booking on Zuzuche was in euros, the rental company actually charged my credit card in Turkish Liras at a rate of 3.2:1 euros to liras, claiming this was their company rate. However, during our 20-day stay from June 20 to July 11, every other transaction, including rentals, hotel bills, shopping, dining, and airport currency exchange, was all settled at a rate of 2.95-3.00:1 euros to liras, consistent with Turkish banks' rates during that period. 2. At pickup, the fuel gauge showed about 90%, but the rental company employee insisted it was full, saying, “No Problem”. Yet upon return, they charged me for not returning the car with a full tank, despite my explanations. They also added charges for parking fees.
On to the second point: On the return day, around 5 PM, we parked the car at the airport parking lot but found no AVIS personnel there. I called the AVIS desk—no answer. After passing through security into the airport, the AVIS desk was unattended. We spent over 40 minutes going back and forth from the parking lot to the AVIS desk looking for someone. Finally, a helpful security guard called around and found someone who told us to go back to the AVIS desk inside the airport. Carrying our luggage, we went through security again only to be told to take the car back out for inspection. This led to the situation where they charged us for not returning the car with a full tank; despite our explanations, AVIS demanded we refuel the car. Resolving this issue took over an hour, including the 40 minutes of searching for AVIS staff. If we hadn't planned extra time, we would have missed our flight.
AVIS, a large company, but engages in petty tricks!
Both the pick-up and return locations were easy to find. After picking up the car, the staff member was requested to drive us back to the hotel, which they did. The return location was in a designated spot in the airport parking lot. Due to unfamiliarity with the airport layout, the counter staff called a colleague to meet us at the arrival hall entrance for the return. The price matched our expectations, the answers to our questions were clear, the car was in excellent condition, very new and clean, and it happened to be a model I love.
The overall service attitude was quite good. The car had run over 30,000 kilometers and was a diesel vehicle. Its performance was decent, and we drove over 2,700 kilometers during our trip.
The reserved car was not available. They said there were no SUVs and didn't offer a car from the same category. Instead, they recommended a sedan Peugeot at the store's current price, which was almost the same as the SUV. Booking online in advance had no benefit and was not cheaper. It would have been more convenient to rent directly at the store. The car was also in poor condition with a very loud engine. I will not rent from this site again.
The rental amount did not include the one-way fee, which caused the cost to increase. The rental company said it wasn’t their fault, but we still had to pay. So, they upgraded the VOLVO S60 to a BENZ CLA180 and included full insurance as compensation.
The car I received was the same as the one I booked. It was very new with only 5000 kilometers. The car was in excellent condition. AVIS's service was quite good, and they did not require a translated or notarized driver's license; I just handwrote my English address for them. The drop-off location was somewhat hard to find, so I recommend noting the route when you pick up the car.
