The staff kept trying to upsell their own insurance and fuel packages multiple times after we refused. It was a bit annoying. The English level of the staff in Spain was not very good, making the overall car rental experience less pleasant than in the US and Australia.
I booked an automatic Touran but when I got to the airport, they said they didn't have any! They gave me an automatic Golf instead, but the price remained the same.
The store is very small and shares space with other companies. There were many people, and you need to be patient while waiting. We had an appointment to pick up the car at 10:30, but ended up waiting for an hour before getting the car.
Arranged a change in return location through the hotel front desk by calling the rental company. Overall, satisfied. The rented car was brand new with only 9km on the odometer.
The front desk staff didn't speak much English when I first arrived, which made communication a bit difficult. However, the car pickup experience was excellent. I rented a compact Golf but received a nearly new Volkswagen Tiguan with only 6000 kilometers on it. The car was in top condition, though being a four-wheel drive, it consumed more fuel. Returning the car was simple; I just handed over the keys and there was no deposit fee. They only charged me the rental fee upon return. Overall, aside from the front desk's limited English, everything was great. I would consider renting from AVIS again, even though it's a bit pricey.
The car had some passive damage without evidence, thankfully I bought full insurance. When returning the car, I filled out a report and explained the situation in English. The insurance covered it, so I didn't have to pay. The return process was very quick.
I specifically chose a store in downtown Zagreb when booking the car and even picked nearby accommodation. But when we went to pick up the car, the store was closed. We had to trouble the landlord to take us by taxi to the airport store to get the car. This information was not updated online in time, wasting our money and time, and we got caught in a heavy rain.
Picked up the car in Madrid; the originally booked Volkswagen Touran was replaced with a Fiat diesel car. I'm not sure if this was an upgrade. The diesel car is slower to accelerate. The pick-up location was decent. However, the drop-off in Granada was on a Sunday. It never occurred to me, nor did anyone inform me, that the store would be closed on Sundays. As a result, I couldn't find the drop-off location and there was no attendant. Fortunately, a very kind local helped me by calling the Madrid store to inquire about the drop-off details, then accompanied me to the designated parking area and showed me where to drop the keys into the box at the store entrance.
Since they pre-charged me for a full tank of fuel at pick-up, I contacted the rental company's customer service multiple times via email. Luckily, when I returned to Shanghai, I saw that the bank only deducted the car rental fee.
The process was quite convenient. They asked for the order, driver's license, passport, and notarized documents, then only inquired about additional insurance (I guessed, as my English isn't great). I declined, swiped my credit card, got the keys (which had the parking spot number), and left. Originally booked a BMW 3, but got a new Lada with only 1700 kilometers. Returning the car was also very easy; I just said 'done' to the staff (non-native speaker), they checked the car with a device, and it was fine. Back at the office, they gave me a receipt.
I originally planned to rent a BMW 3 Series, but since it is considered a large car, I needed to have two credit cards. I only had one, so I had to switch to a smaller car. The staff was very friendly, and I ended up renting a Mercedes diesel car. The power was excellent. Thumbs up!
The staff drove the car to us when we rented it, and the return process was very smooth. They took the car from the front door without inspecting the exterior much.
The car had many minor scratches that needed to be carefully checked, photographed, and then confirmed in writing with the staff in the hall. The store at Madrid T1 is a long walk from T2, and there were many people in line, possibly because it was Sunday. The car we got was an older, basic model.
Very bad, I will never use this company again.
1. I reserved a mid-sized MPV equivalent to a Sharan, but they gave me a Touran, which is much smaller. After hitting the road, I realized it was the lowest configuration, which was really disappointing.
2. I returned the car 20 minutes late and was charged an extra day's rental fee, which makes no sense. When I argued with them, they just said it's the rule. Impossible to communicate!
3. The deposit I paid doesn't seem to be accounted for; AVIS said it's a service fee and they don't know anything about it, still impossible to communicate with them.
So, I hope to resolve the following issues:
1. Is it reasonable to charge an extra day for being 20 minutes late? Please inform me. I saw on the receipt that there's an overtime fee calculated by time, not by a full day.
2. When will my deposit be refunded? Please explain.
Bad review, I'll go with Hertz next time, AVIS is truly a mess.
